With two decades of experience in film and television costume design, I bring a wealth of expertise to my millinery work. Hailing from Austin, Texas, I've also lived and worked in New York, New Orleans, and Budapest. My experience in creating intricate and expressive costumes for the screen naturally led me to explore the art of millinery several years ago. Since then, I've made hats for private clients and productions, combining my background in entertainment with the rich traditions of British hat-making. Relocating to the UK has allowed me to refine my craft further and immerse myself in a vibrant millinery community.
Collaborating with my clients on bespoke orders is a true joy for me. Together, we embark on a journey to craft a one-of-a-kind hat or headpiece that impeccably complements both the attire and the event. Throughout the process, I prioritize listening to my clients' preferences and considering the appropriateness of each design element for the occasion. From selecting quality materials to meticulously attending to every detail of craftsmanship, our collaborative effort ensures that the final piece not only meets but exceeds expectations. Clients are invited to explore an array of shapes, sizes, colors, materials, and trimmings, making the design process both enjoyable and enriching.
My design inspiration in millinery is rooted in a diverse range of influences. My work in film and television has been a significant source, offering a dynamic blend of creativity and storytelling that fuels my imagination. Equally, my passion for historical clothing and textiles plays a crucial role; I am continually inspired by the intricate craftsmanship and rich narratives embedded in these garments. Textiles, flowers, and feathers, with their unique textures and patterns, speak to me and provide endless possibilities for design. Moreover, the natural world is a perpetual muse—plants, organic shapes, and the serene beauty of everyday nature infuse my work with fresh, innovative ideas. This eclectic mix of inspirations allows me to create millinery pieces that are both timeless and contemporary.
My millinery skills and enthusiasm are primarily due to my training at the British School of Millinery, where I’ve taken various courses and trained to an advanced level. My creative journey began at a young age, learning to sew from my grandmother. Throughout my life and career, I’ve continuously pursued opportunities to expand my skill set, viewing each new technique as an invaluable addition to my creative arsenal. I’ve delved into wet and dry felting techniques in Budapest, undertaken various classes at the School of Historical Dress in London, and enriched my knowledge through millinery courses facilitated by my union, IATSE, in the States. Moreover, I’ve shared my expertise by teaching fellow union members valuable tips and insights into millinery for set costumers, fostering a collaborative environment within the industry.”
